156 HEURISTIC If a heuristic is an 'aid to some end' then there is some connection between our proceedings and language or theory. The connection is not neutral: we use arguments from linguistics (etc) because we have hopes, desires, expectations, psychological attitudes about proceeding in one way rather than another.
